Poem Emulation: I Hear America Singing
By: Lupita Nieto
I hear America singing, the multiple songs I have overheard,
The people that work with machines each have a different muse that helps them through the day, The people that work with wood measure their wood for the cabinets with lots of inspiration, The stone/brick worker happy to go to work and leave work, The ferryman humming while working with his boat along with his crew, The cobbler enjoying himself as he works and fixes shoes and hats, The lumberjacks song of farming is calming in the morning, noon, and on break, The sweet mother with her caring personality is working along with the daughter doing chores, Each person in doing what they do best and trying to do their best as well, During the day each has their job but at the end of the day each person is friendly and strong, Everyone sings their tune in perfect pitch no matter what they are doing. |
What does it mean to be American? What is the "American Life"?
For me to be American means to live free, getting to go to school to get an education, getting to vote for something you believe in when you are 18 years and older. To be American is great, you get to be whatever you want to be when you’re older, you get to chose your own career, you get to participate in sports, organizations, you have free will to do anything (with a few restrictions). To be American it doesn’t mean that you have to live in America, or be born in the U.S.A but it depends on how you chose to live your life, either getting a good education or doing something you love without anybody telling you how to live your life, either getting a good education or doing something you love without anybody telling you how to live your life because if you think it is right for you then you do it. The American Life is doing what pleases you as long as it is legal like having a career that you love, getting to vote for what you think is right, being able to stand up for yourself and for others that are not being treated right. The American Life may not always be true but you have to make the best out of what you have and appreciating those who stay by your side like your family, friends, and even teachers or mentors. You have the freedom to express yourself and do whats right for your future. You can share your ideas with others and have equal rights and opportunities. You are able to speak without being discriminated against and be able to chose your own path. You won’t be judged by the color of your skin or race.
